Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre retains a vital place in the city’s vibrant live entertainment scene. Built in 1928, the theatre is a blend of European flavours. The exterior is a replica of a Florentine palace and the interior shows a strong Spanish influence. The Comedy Theatre still maintains a lot of its original characteristics including balcony seating, a generous foyer and an elegant staircase.

It is not only comedy that you will find here. Audiences can enjoy a diverse range of theatre and live entertainment. With seating for 1000 patrons over two levels, famous shows to have played the Comedy Theatre stage include; Keating, Menopause the Musical, Waiting for Godot, The Rocky Horror Show, Avenue Q, Rock of Ages and Jagged Little Pill.

VENUE TICKET COLLECTIONS
Pre-paid tickets can be collected from the venue Box Office within the said opening hours of 1.5 hours prior to the show on the day of the performance. 

MARRINER GROUP EXCHANGE POLICY

Ticket exchanges MAY be available for this event. Requests can be submitted via this LINK or phone 1300 11 10 11, option 3, between Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Please note:

  • All requests must be made no later than 7 days prior to start of the ticketed performance.
  • Only 1 exchange per event will be allowed.
  • A per ticket exchange fee of $8.40 applies up to a maximum of $25.20 per exchange transaction.
  • All requests are subject to availability at the time of exchange and must be of equal value of the original ticket(s) purchased.
  • If you wish to exchange to a higher priced ticket(s), you will be required to pay the full price of your new tickets, plus the applicable exchange fees and then a credit will be applied on your original date tickets.
  • No exchanges or refunds can be provided after the deadlines listed above or after a performance date unless required by applicable law.
  • Exchanges may also be available if the performance is postponed or rescheduled.

We can only assist customers who purchased their tickets via Ticketek, the authorised ticket seller for all Marriner Group venues (Regent Theatre, Comedy Theatre, Princess Theatre and Forum Melbourne) or through approved partners.

Patrons of the Comedy Theatre can avail of preferred parking rates at some nearby Wilson Parking car parks.

The Comedy Theatre is situated in the Melbourne CBD and is accessible by all modes of transport.

ACCESSIBILITY

PHYSICAL ACCESS
At the doors facing on to Exhibition Street there is a small step, whichas you move away from Lonsdale Street is reduced to a small lip. Doors are usually propped open during performances. The entrance opens directly into the foyer, which is small and can become quite congested. The Box Office and bar are located to the left, and another small bar to the right.

AUDITORIUM
Only Stalls can be accessed without steps and can be accessed directly from the foyer. Seating is mildly raked. Two central aisles and two side aisles provide plenty of aisle seats. Side aisle seating is irregularly numbered. Although the aisles themselves are raked, the back seating rows have a slight step, providing a level footing surface for the audience. Access to the Dress Circle is via a large staircase with handrails. Dress Circle seating is quite steeply tiered. There is a bar that can be accessed from the Dress Circle area.

TOILETS
There are toilets located both upstairs and downstairs at the Comedy Theatre.  
Accessible / Unisex
There is a unisex accessible toilet located in the Stalls inner foyer.  Please go through the Stalls Foyer on the far right hand side, just before you enter the auditorium.

Entrance
The Comedy Theatre can provide a ramp into one of the front doors on Exhibition Street. A member of our security or front of house staff will be able to assist you on arrival at the theatre.

FACILITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY IMPAIRMENTS
Patrons with difficulty negotiating steps are advised to book seating in Stalls area, as there are several large sets of staircases leading to the Dress Circle.

FACILITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH SIGHT IMPAIRMENTS
Seats close to the stage can be requested when booking tickets. Please book through the Box Office on 1300 11 10 11. Some shows have audio-described performances. Direct enquires to the Association for the Blind.

FACILITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS
There is a hearing loop within the Stalls seating. People with a hearing aid will need a ‘T switch’. Please contact the Box Office directly for more information on 1300 11 10 11.

CHILDREN RULES  - MARRINER GROUP BABES-IN-ARMS POLICY

Most productions are considered to be unsuitable for children under the age of two years.  If taking your child under two years of age into the theatre, please be aware of the following concerns:

  • Tripping hazards, row spacing, stairs, steep rakes and the lack of light in the auditorium during a performance can be particularly hazardous when carrying an infant within the theatre.
  • Production elements such as loud music, bright lights pyrotechnic stage effects and show content can cause distress to infants.          
  • The potential for disturbance to other patrons by crying or restless infants.

Parents choosing to visit the theatre with children less than two years of age are asked to liaise with the theatre's front-of-house staff on arrival at the theatre.

Please be considerate of other patrons in the theatre. If your infant is causing a disturbance, we ask that you temporarily remove the infant from the auditorium.

As the safety of children, parents and other patrons is of high importance, these concerns are brought to your attention for your consideration so that you and all other patrons can enjoy the show in a safe environment.

PLEASE NOTE: Patrons attending with a child under 2 years must purchase an aisle seat in the stalls as this is the safest option.  It is recommended that you book through the Box Office by calling 1300 11 10 11.

There are no cushions or booster seats at the Comedy Theatre. Patrons are permitted to bring their own cushions.

AGE RESTRICTIONS
Some events have specific age restrictions. Please check this for your ticketed show.

Please note that children under the age of 15 require the accompaniment of an adult to be admitted to the theatre, to ensure suitable care is provided throughout the entire production.

PRAMS
There are limited pram parking facilities at the venue, and prams cannot be brought into the auditorium. Where possible, we advise leaving your pram at home or in the car.

PROHIBITED
Alcohol, hot drinks, cans, bottles, recording equipment, can not be brought onto the premises.

NO SMOKING
The Comedy Theatre is a no smoking and no vaping venue.

ATM’s
There are no ATM’s on the premises.  Closest ATM is on Exhibition Street.

LOST, STOLEN OR DAMAGED TICKETS
Lost, stolen or damaged tickets must be reported to Ticketek prior to the event day, or prior to 4pm on the event day

CLOAKROOM
Our cloakroom is located to the left on entry to the venue, beside the box office. Please only bring handbags and satchels that are smaller than an A4 piece of paper to the theatre. Due to security requirements, you may be asked to show the contents of your bags to theatre staff.

SEATING
The Comedy Theatre is a fully seated venue over two levels.
Patrons attending the Comedy Theatre are allowed to bring their own cushions for small children only.
